How much does tree removal cost in Boise?
Tree removal cost depends primarily on tree size, access, and what the tree is growing near. A small ornamental far from structures versus a large cottonwood hanging over the house are very different jobs. Size, access, and proximity all move the price. Do you handle emergency and storm-damage removal?

When should tree trimming be scheduled in Boise?
Late winter through early spring, roughly January through March, suits most deciduous trees here. The tree is dormant, the canopy structure is fully visible, and cuts heal quickly once growth resumes. Two exceptions matter locally: elms should never be trimmed April through October because of elm bark beetle and Dutch elm disease, and oaks should avoid April through June.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Boise?
Usually not on private residential property. Trees in the public right-of-way, the strip between the sidewalk and the street, designated heritage trees, and some planned developments do need city approval first. What happens if the tree is touching a power line?
The utility comes first. Work near energized lines takes coordination, and in many cases Idaho Power has to handle or de-energize the drop before anyone climbs. How long does a tree removal take?
Most single-tree removals run two to six hours, from setup through final cleanup. A large tree in a tight backyard that has to come down in roped sections can take a full day with a crew of three or four. Trimming is quicker: one to two hours on a small ornamental, three to five on a big maple that needs detailed structural work.
Is my tree dying, or does it just need trimming?
The trunk and roots answer that, not the branches. A dead or badly leaning tree, a trunk with rot or hollow spots, mushrooms at the base, or roots cut by construction all point toward removal, because the structure itself is failing. Does homeowner’s insurance cover storm damage tree removal?
It depends on the cause. If a tree fell onto a covered structure during a storm, homeowner’s insurance typically covers both the structure repair and removing the tree from the structure. Taking down a standing dead tree as a precaution is generally not covered. We can provide documentation if you are filing a claim; just ask when you call.
Does it cost less to grind the stump during the removal?
Usually, yes. The crew and the grinder are already on site, so a combined estimate almost always comes in under booking the grind as a separate trip. If you plan to replant or re-sod that spot, mention it up front so the work matches what you want to do with the space. Old stumps left behind by a previous owner can be done on their own visit too.
What makes cottonwoods and Siberian elms so risky in Boise?
They grow fast, tall, and heavy, and their wood is brittle relative to their size. Mature cottonwoods routinely shed large limbs during wind events, sometimes with no obvious warning, and Siberian elm is the other local weak-wood offender. A big limb over a roof or outbuilding is a genuine hazard. If you have either standing near a structure, a risk assessment before storm season is worth doing.
What affects the price of tree removal the most?
Four things do most of the work: the tree’s height and trunk diameter, what it stands over (a roof, a fence, a power drop, or open lawn), how close the chipper and grinder can park, and the tree’s condition. A tree that can be felled into open lawn is the cheap case. One that has to be dismantled in roped sections over a roof is the expensive one.
Can a half-dead tree be saved, or does it have to come down?
That turns on what killed the half that died. Drought stress, chlorosis, and some pest problems can be turned around, and targeted pruning takes out the dead material so the tree can rebuild. Root damage and advanced trunk decay usually cannot be reversed. An assessment sorts one from the other before you spend money in the wrong direction.

How often should a mature tree be trimmed?
Species and growth rate set the interval. Fast-growing shade trees near a house generally want attention more often than slow-growing ornamentals and conifers, which can often go three to five years between visits. You get a realistic maintenance interval during the estimate, based on what the crew actually sees in your yard rather than a generic schedule.
What does it mean when mushrooms grow at the tree’s base?
It can mean decay. Fungal fruiting bodies at the root flare or on the lower trunk often signal rot inside the wood, which is a structural problem rather than a cosmetic one. The canopy can still look healthy while that is happening. Do not knock them off and forget it. That is exactly the tree worth having assessed, especially if it stands over the house or driveway.
